Considered the sexiest medicine, Viagra has been a game-changer this weekend in the form of a tablet.
However, it was only a game-changer when a pharmaceutical company discovered the medicine in July 1998.
The erectile dysfunction drug, sold under the brand name Viagra, was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and marketed as ‘the little blue pill’.
But as the drug was discovered, it also had side effects.
The medicine was also introduced in Europe and Asia, with initial US approval expected in 2006. However, it wasn’t until late last month that the FDA approved the drug as a generic.
However, a spokesperson told the British Medical Medical Journal (BMJ) that the company had been approached by generic makers to sell their product.
“We believe that the introduction of a new drug and generic medication can significantly impact our business,” said Matthew Smith, a spokesman for Pfizer.
“We are committed to bringing new products to market that have the highest efficacy and safety profile.”
However, it’s not just Viagra that can be hit.
Pfizer has said that its sales of Viagra went from about $1 billion in the US in 2010 to $6 billion this year.
The drug has been on the market since 1998 and has been prescribed to millions of men across the globe.
But it wasn’t until last month that FDA approval of the medicine was announced.
In a statement, Pfizer said that it had ‘decided’ to market the drug for ‘off-label indications’ rather than ‘real-life usage’.
The statement, issued by Pfizer’s pharmaceutical division, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, stressed that the drug was not for use by men under the age of 18 and that the potential benefits were considered outweighable under the discretion of the FDA.
‘Off-label’ indications include the treatment of erectile dysfunction, such as impotence or pulmonary arterial hypertension, and premature ejaculation, such as erectile dysfunction,’ the statement reads.
‘Off-label’ use is defined as the use of a drug for which there is a lack of efficacy or safety concerns,’ the statement says.
‘This includes use for conditions other than those listed in this article.’
Viagra was previously known as sildenafil. However, Smith said that the medicine was still available without a prescription.
Viagra was introduced to the market as a treatment for erectile dysfunction in 1998, and since then, more than 15 million men have taken the drug.

A number of pharmaceutical companies have taken the drug to market for off-label indications, including Pfizer, Bayer, Johnson & Johnson, and Teva.
As the drug has been a game-changer since its discovery in 1998, Viagra has become a household name, with millions of men worldwide taking it.
According to the British Medical Journal, more than 300 million men worldwide took Viagra in 2010, up from around 1.7 million in 2006.
Last year, a total of 15 million prescriptions were filled for the drug.
Last month, Pfizer, which owns the patent on Viagra, said that generic manufacturers were selling the drug for ‘off-label indications’ rather than real-life use.
‘The introduction of a new drug and generic medication can significantly impact our business,’ Smith said.
However, Smith added that the availability of Viagra as a generic was still something Pfizer was still interested in.
‘Pfizer is committed to bringing new products to market that have the highest efficacy and safety profile.’
But he added that the company was still in talks with drug manufacturers to sell the drug.
‘We are aware of the potential risks and are working with drug manufacturers to provide guidance on the safest and most appropriate treatment for erectile dysfunction,’ Smith concluded.
It’s not yet known whether Viagra is on the market for ‘off-label indications’ or if the FDA will approve it for use in real-life situations.
